The post In-Depth Course Review: Excel/VBA for Creative Problem Solving appeared first on The Report by Class Central.

My certificate of completion for the Specialization

Excel/VBA for Creative Problem Solving is the first ever Course/Specialization I took on Excel/VBA. And I just didn’t need anything else! It’s a complete package. The instructor, Charlie Nuttelman, is super friendly and knowledgeable. He is one of the Top Instructors on Coursera, which totally makes sense.

What I learned from him, aside from Excel/VBA, is how much you need to have the basics clear in order to “excel” at anything. Many of us know a thing or two about Excel, but don’t realize there’s so much more that Excel can do. It was the same with me too. But after taking this Specialization, and also Parts 1 and Part 2 of Everyday Excel, I realized how much I had been missing all this time. And I also got a pretty good grip on VBA, thanks to the intensive projects of Part 3.

Charlie Nuttelman, Instructor of Excel/VBA for Creative Problem Solving

It is very important to not only learn and practice, but challenge your limits and learn on your own to solve actual, real-world problems. Many programming courses teach you the concepts and basic problems, but this Specialization actually makes you put your concepts to the test. As a Civil Engineering student, I found this really helpful.

After taking these courses, I’ve developed more confidence in using Excel and VBA. Whenever we are asked to do something in class using Excel, I know I can do it better than most and with confidence.

My Community Guided Project Creator badge

I would also like to mention here that I have a Guided Project on Coursera, Problem Solving using Microsoft Excel (it might be unavailable right now), and if I was able to create, it’s really thanks to Charlie Nuttelman. It was from his courses that I could learn Excel properly and actually make a Guided Project on Excel. I referred to his lessons, and included things that I learned from him. Without his courses, my Guided Project wouldn’t have been possible.

In October of 2021, Community Guided Projects were shut down. Class Central data shows that I had the second most popular Community Guided Project based on enrollments. When Coursera shut down Community Guided Projects, I was invited to create a course for the Coursera Project Network.

Excel can do more than you can possibly imagine, and VBA, with its powerful programming capabilities, lets you do even more. If you can successfully complete this Specialization, you will most likely be able to solve just about any problem on Excel/VBA. Onto my in-depth review!

Excel/VBA for Creative Problem Solving is a three-course Specialization offered by the University of Colorado Boulder. It is currently available for enrollment on Coursera. The Specialization aims to change the way one uses Excel spreadsheets by teaching how to automate and optimize spreadsheets using Visual Basics for Applications (VBA).

It has three courses: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. The first two courses teach learners the basics of VBA through video lectures, quizzes and in-application programming assignments. In Part 3, learners need to complete three “real world” projects, which will then be graded through peer review.

This is not a hardcore programming course. It is more of a problem-solving course where we utilize computing techniques like VBA to solve real-world problems. Due to its visual nature, VBA makes learning programming easy even for those who have never programmed or solved problems using computer programs before.

On completion of the whole Specialization, you’ll get a separate certificate as well as the individual certificates for each of the three courses. So, four certificates in total. Of course, you’d still get the individual course certificates even if you don’t plan to take all the three courses.

Need to improve your Excel skills? Check out the Specialization, Everyday Excel, by the same instructor on Coursera. I took the first two courses and also found them very valuable.

Excel/VBA for Creative Problem Solving, Part 1

My certificate of completion for Part 1 of the Specialization

Excel/VBA for Creative Problem Solving, Part 1 teaches us to increase the efficiency with Excel by using the powerful programming and customizing abilities of VBA.

This course covers the following topics in each week:

  1. Create macros to automate procedures in Excel
  2. Define user-defined functions
  3. Create basic subroutines to interface with the user
  4. Learn the basic programming structures in VBA
  5. Automate Excel’s Goal Seek and Solver tools and use numerical techniques to create “live solutions” to solve targeting and optimization problems.

The course starts at a very basic level and gradually builds up in-depth topics. It is very detailed and minutely presents the many capabilities of Excel VBA.

Each week has dozens of excellent screencasts. Then there is a quiz that you must pass in order to unlock its solutions and a succeeding programming assignment. Assignment previews and instructions are neatly described by the instructor. These programming assignments are “in-application”, which means you’ll try to find out the solution on your own computer by simply downloading the assignment file. Once you pass it, you’ll be given a secret code which you have to put in the next quiz to pass. Pretty interesting, right!

There are also Discussion Forums for each week where you can share your thoughts with your fellow learners.
Week 5 of this course is special because if you pass the assignments, you’ll get a nice Honors designation on your certificate. This week is optional, but if you want to up your skills and earn an extra credential, you should definitely go for it. Here, you’ll learn some special Excel tools like Goal Seek and Solver, and use those to solve real-world problems on your own.

Excel/VBA for Creative Problem Solving, Part 2

My certificate of completion for Part 2 of the Specialization

Excel/VBA for Creative Problem Solving, Part 2 introduces foundational and broad problems inspired by situations that we might encounter in the real world.

This course covers the following topics in each week:

  1. Learn how to work with arrays and import/export arrays from/to Excel using VBA code
  2. Learn how to work with text strings and write data to .txt files and import information from .txt files
  3. Automate the import, modification, and consolidation of information from multiple worksheets into a central worksheet as well as the import of information from multiple workbooks to a central workbook
  4. Gain experience with creating professional user forms to interface with the user, perform advanced calculations, and manipulate data on the spreadsheet.

If you have a foundational understanding of VBA code and programming structures, you can jump right into Part 2 without taking Part 1, and use the screencasts in Part 1 as reference.

Just like Part 1, Part 2 also has excellent screencasts, and requires you to pass a quiz and complete a problem-solving assignment in each module. These assignments are also “in-application”, which I think is a unique feature of this Specialization. It’s the same as Part 1. It also has Discussion Forums for each week where you can discuss ideas with your course-mates. But this part does not have the optional Honors week.

Excel/VBA for Creative Problem Solving, Part 3 (Projects)

My certificate of completion for Part 3 of the Specialization

Excel/VBA for Creative Problem Solving, Part 3 is easier to describe than to take. It is highly recommended that you first take Part 1 and Part 2. This course builds off skills learned in those two courses.

Part 3 is a project-based course where you’ll be given challenging, real-world projects that you’ll have to build in Excel/VBA. But don’t worry! The instructor has part-by-part explanatory screencasts for each project. These are only to get you started, and you’ll have to complete the rest of the project on your own. But if you follow his videos and hints carefully, you’ll surely get to the full solution without any trouble.

The four compulsory weeks of this course require you to complete one project in each week, with each week having two projects to choose from. So, even if you’re not very sure about one topic, you can take the other one. The projects are quite open-ended and there are multiple ways to solve the problems.

This course also has the optional Week 5, where you’ll get an Honors designation on your certificate if you pass. This project can be very challenging, and you must have enough patience and perseverance to make it to the end. But thanks to the screencasts, it becomes a lot easier.

Grading is done through Peer Review where other learners will grade your project based on a grading rubric and vice-versa.

And finally, if you’re able to complete all the three parts of this Specialization, you’ll get a Specialization certificate! Mine’s at the top. If you plan to get one too, I hope you enjoy the courses.

Codecademy, which teaches learners how to code, has been acquired by Skillsoft for $525 million in cash and stock.

The company went viral in 2011, because it taught coding basics interactively within the browser itself. This was around the time MOOCs appeared on the scene.

Within 72 hours of launching, it acquired 200,000 learners, and a few months later, it raised $2.5 million. Last year, the company raised $40 million for a total of $87.5 million in funding.

In 2017, they launched a subscription, Codecademy Pro. Initially, only course exercises and projects were made part of the subscription, while conceptual lessons remained free-to-access. Now, about half of Codecademy’s 130+ courses are only accessible to subscribers. Codecademy Pro costs $39.99 per month, or $19.99 per month if paid annually.

Like MOOC providers, Codecademy has been eyeing the lucrative enterprise market.

Currently, the company makes $50 million dollars in recurring revenue and has over 40 million registered learners.

[2022] 1600+ Coursera Courses That Are Still Completely Free Mon, 03 Jan 2022 14:00:48 +0000 Did you know Coursera has many courses that are still completely free? Class Central has the complete list.

The post [2022] 1600+ Coursera Courses That Are Still Completely Free appeared first on The Report by Class Central.

Free courses on Coursera

Is Coursera Free?

Are Coursera courses still free? At Class Central, we get that question so often that I wrote a guide to answer it. Generally speaking, Coursera courses are free to audit, but if you want to access graded assignments or earn a Course Certificate, you will need to pay. This change was first announced in October 2015, and went live in January 2016.

But I always knew that there were a few courses that were still completely free. When you signed up for these courses, you would see an option of “Full Course, No Certificate.” For courses that are part of the new model, you need to select the “audit” option.

It can be tricky to figure out which courses have this option. This is because Coursera is a single page app, and the information is only available once you’re logged in. So instead of going through each course one by one and then clicking on enroll, I decided to use Selenium to help me figure it out. Bob set me up with an AWS instance and a Cloud 9 IDE where I could do this automation. Below is a screenshot of the setup. (Yes, I prefer PHP.)

I expected to find around 50 or so free courses out of an active catalog of ~6,000 Coursera courses. Imagine my surprise (rather shock) to find more than 1,600 Coursera MOOCs that are still completely free (including the graded assignments, minus the certificate). Even Coursera’s own help pages claim that for “all courses” you can only access the non-graded materials and lectures for free. (Side note: In my research, I also found a few dozen completely paid online courses).

Free Coursera Courses

This list of completely free online Coursera courses contains a number of highly rated MOOCs, including a few from Class Central’s Best Online Courses of All Time. In fact, Coursera’s two most popular MOOCs by far — Barbara Oakley’s Learning How To Learn and Coursera co-founder Andrew Ng’s Machine Learning MOOC — are also part of this list. Courses from 178 universities, including Stanford, Georgia Tech, Yale, Duke, and Michigan, are part of the list. Around 37% of the courses are not in English.

I have organized the courses into the following categories below. Click on the category name to jump directly to the list of free courses from that particular category.

Below is a list of completely the free online courses on Coursera that I was able to find. If you are looking for free certificates, check out some of our compilations:

The post [2022] 600+ Free Google Certifications appeared first on The Report by Class Central.

I have been a user of Google’s products for so many years, from Search to Map, from Gmail to Drive. I started exploring more educational materials from Google in 2019 to upskill myself in the digital rainforest. I received a free Google Analytics certification for my efforts.

If you are looking for Google courses on Class Central, you will find Google and Google Cloud courses. They are offered via online learning providers such as Coursera or Udacity.

But Google offers more online courses and training programs in different subjects through both their own platforms or third-party platforms, aggregated in their “Grow with Google” platform. A big number of those courses are free and offer a free certification.

So, I decided to look through different Google learning platforms and made a simple list of courses and training programs. Then, I filtered the courses and compiled a list of free Google certifications.

Here is what I found in my research: I identified 600+ free courses with free certifications on different Google learning platforms. Topics include online business, digital marketing, Google analytics, and Google cloud.

You may also want to have a look at some of our other compilations of free certificates and courses, including:

[2022] Massive List of Thousands of Free Certificates and Badges Wed, 29 Dec 2021 14:00:50 +0000 Thousands of courses with free certificates and badges offered by MOOC platforms, universities, companies, and nonprofits worldwide.

The post [2022] Massive List of Thousands of Free Certificates and Badges appeared first on The Report by Class Central.

Courses with Free Certificates

A certificate might be an important incentive for learners to enroll and complete a course. At the beginning of the MOOC movement, major MOOC (massive open online course) platforms like Coursera, edX, and Udacity offered free certificates. But by 2015, paid certificates had replaced free ones in most courses.

However, MOOC platforms like Coursera and FutureLearn still provide free certificates from time to time. And companies like Google and Microsoft have also started offering free certificates to promote online education related to their technologies and products.

To keep track of free certificates that are scattered across various platforms, I compiled the following list, and I will keep updating it as new offerings appear.

If you know about more offers or notice an error in the list, please let us know in the comments. And if you don’t find what you need here, either browse our extensive catalog of 50,000 online courses or have a look at our curated collections:

To see all our compilations, visit Class Central’s Collections.

Free Bootcamps & Cohorts

In addition to the free online courses listed further down, if you’d like to learn online with a community of learners worldwide, and with weekly Zoom sessions with experts, I encourage you to join our bootcamps and cohorts. They’re free, remote, and open to everyone. Below are some of our cohorts and bootcamps. You can find the full list here.

So I looked through Google’s different learning platforms and compiled all their offerings. Then, I filtered the list to keep only Google’s free certificate courses.

Here is what I found: 600+ courses with free certificates and badges offered by Google. Topics include online business, digital marketing, Google analytics, and Google cloud.

Start 2022 with a Bang: Join our Free Cohorts & Learn with People Worldwide! Tue, 28 Dec 2021 13:49:45 +0000 Free, remote, and open to all, with weekly Zoom sessions with experts!

The post Start 2022 with a Bang: Join our Free Cohorts & Learn with People Worldwide! appeared first on The Report by Class Central.

In brief: Join a Cohort to take an online course with learners worldwide and take part in weekly Zoom sessions with instructors. These experiences usually come at a premium. At Class Central, they’re free and open to all. Enroll here!

Have you ever started an online course with the intention of finishing it, only to lose motivation halfway through it? I certainly have. Online learning is great, but it can be lonely. We know. At Class Central, we’re online learners ourselves. Gone are the days where online course forums were buzzing with activity, helping you stay motivated and on track.

This is why for over a year, we’ve been running an experiment at Class Central. We’ve been trying to add a social layer on top of free online courses. Initially, we called it Study Groups. We thought it would attract mostly learners like us. But right off the bat, course instructors asked to be involved too. So now, we call it Cohorts.

Cohorts in a Nutshell

You can learn all about Class Central Cohorts here, but in a nutshell, cohorts consist of learners worldwide:

  • Taking an online course together, following a common study schedule.
  • Asking questions and supporting each other through a dedicated forum.
  • Meeting weekly on Zoom with a guide to learn together and stay motivated.

We also organize bootcamps, which are a special type of cohort, built for scale. You can learn all about Class Central Bootcamps here.

Meet the Instructors

David Hik (POLAR), Raj Raghunathan (University of Texas), Nicky Bull (Macquarie University)

Cohorts can be led by a peer, a subject matter expert, or the actual instructor of the course.

Over the past year, we had the chance of having fantastic instructors leading our cohorts, including Dr. Raj Raghunathan, Professor at the University of Texas, who led the A Life of Happiness and Fulfillment Cohort, and Dr. David Hik, who led the Mountains 101 Cohort and is now heading an ambitious scientific and outreach mission in the Canadian Arctic.

And our 2022 cohorts will be no different. For instance, Dr. Barbara Oakley, Professor at Oakland University and creator of Learning How to Learn (one of the most-popular MOOCs ever, with over 3 million enrollments on Coursera) will lead a cohort structured around her latest course, Uncommon Sense Teaching. A few months back, Barb spoke to our bootcampers about the neuroscience of learning. Discover her teaching style below.

Spring 2022 Cohorts

Without further ado, here is our cohorts lineup for the start of 2022.

Uncommon Sense Teaching Cohort with Barbara Oakley

Black holes are astronomical objects that capture the imagination. In this cohort, we’ll try to understand the scientific concepts that underpin them. If you liked the movie Interstellar, join this peer-led cohort. It starts on January 3. More details and enrollment here.

In a Nutshell: Look for a link to audit the course. We have marked it in these screenshots.

Coursera Audit Link

Here at Class Central we get asked all the time whether Coursera courses are really free. The Coursera user interface (UI) is designed to push learners towards Coursera’s paid offerings, and it may confuse new learners regarding what’s free on the platform and how to sign up for it.

Note: 1600+ courses are available completely free

How to Enroll in Coursera Courses for Free

In brief:

  • Look for a link to Audit the course on individual course pages. The Audit option is not available on Specialization, MasterTrack, or Professional Certificate Pages so you need to navigate to the single course page first.
  • Some courses include assessment items (but no certificate) for free. Simply sign up for Full Course, No Certificate.
  • Some courses are paid-only. Look for the green $ symbol on the Class Central page.
  • If you are unable to pay and want a certificate, you can apply to Coursera for Financial aid.

Read on for more details.

What is Coursera?

Coursera is an online education provider that offers online courses, popularly known as MOOCs or Massive Open Online Courses, from top universities around the world. These partners include Stanford, Duke, Penn, Princeton, Michigan, Peking, and HEC Paris. Coursera also partners with companies like IBM, Google, and PwC — these companies have also launched courses on Coursera. Currently it has 190 active partners from 48 countries around the world.

As well as individual courses and 34 online degrees, Coursera offers 900+ groups of courses known as Specializations, Professional Certificates, and MasterTracks. Some groups of courses can be used as credit towards degrees available through Coursera, but these are not free when used as university credit.

Can you get a Coursera Certificate for Free?

Certificates were free in Coursera’s early days. Unfortunately, you can’t get a free certificate for completing Coursera courses now. Many MOOC providers have stopped offering free certificates for completing their online courses.

You can, however, apply for financial aid for most courses if you can’t afford to pay for a certificate.

Is Coursera Still Free?

Yes and no. A few courses on Coursera are paid only. These are indicated on Class Central by a small green $ symbol. One example is Image Understanding with TensorFlow on GCP.

At the time of writing this article, a big majority of the courses have some element of “free” — mostly the videos are free to watch but you need to pay if you want access to graded assignments and certificates. However, Coursera still has many courses for which even the graded assignments are completely free.

You must sign up (Join for Free) with Coursera before you can see the price. Your Class Central account is not the same as an account with Coursera.

How to Audit Coursera Courses

Coursera calls having access to the free portions of a course “auditing the course.”  I first came across this concept of auditing when I went to Georgia Tech, where I got my Masters in Computer Science. I got my undergrad degree in India and we didn’t have the concept of auditing there.

Here is a quick definition from a university’s FAQ: Auditing a course allows a student to take a class without the benefit of a grade or credit for a course.

So when you are trying to enroll in Coursera courses for free, look for the word Audit after you select the Enroll For Free button. Audit does not include assessment items or a certificate, but lecture videos, course readings, and discussion forums are usually available for free. Coursera keeps tweaking their UI or testing different iterations so what’s on your screen on Coursera’s website may be different from our screenshots.

To avoid providing your payment details to Coursera, you need to select the Audit link.

What if the Audit link is not visible?

First, you need to find the course page. You cannot sign up for free via Specialization pages.

Most newly launched courses are part of a Specialization or Professional Certificate. Some older courses that were around twelve weeks long have been converted into Specialization format, with the original course split into multiple courses.

Professional Certificate and Specialization pages do not allow you to sign up for a single course. If you click on the “Enroll for Free” button, you will only be given an option to subscribe to the whole Professional Certificate or Specialization.

To audit for free, you need to find the individual course pages. If you scroll down a bit you will see a list of courses that are part of the Specialization. Click on a course name to go to the single course page.

Unfortunately, even though it lists the courses in the Specialization, the Specialization page may not necessarily link to the individual courses via the course name links. In this case, to visit the course’s page, copy the course name and paste it in the search bar on Coursera. Better yet, you could search for the course on Class Central — We will also show you results of similar courses that are not on Coursera.

When you are on the course page, select the Enroll button and look for an Audit link as shown above.

Because some courses are part of more than one Specialization or Professional Certificate, you may see a pop-up like this one. Click Next, or first select the drop-down arrow to change the program.

The next screen shows the Audit link.

If you are on an individual course page and there is no Audit link, it may be one of the few paid only courses. You can check this by going back to the Class Central information page and looking for a green $ symbol for the COST.

Full Course, No Certificate

This pop-up appears for courses with free access to graded assignments. Simply select the Full Course, No Certificate option.

Coursera Screenshot - No Certificate

What is Coursera Plus?

The pop-up may include Coursera Plus information, but you are still looking for an Audit link.

Coursera Plus is a single payment that gives you access to most courses in the catalogue for 12 months, including assessments and certificates. While not free, if you want certificates for several courses or Specializations, it may be a worthwhile investment.

I hope you found this guide useful. Please let me know if you find a Coursera course that doesn’t fit the patterns described above.

[2022] 750+ Hours of Free LinkedIn Learning Courses with Free Certification Wed, 22 Dec 2021 14:00:01 +0000 We've compiled 750+ hours of LinkedIn Learning resources including free certificates

The post [2022] 750+ Hours of Free LinkedIn Learning Courses with Free Certification appeared first on The Report by Class Central.

In response to the pandemic, many providers offered free certificates and online learning resources. At Class Central, we compiled these into a list that we updated regularly. Our list grew to ~100 resources and has been viewed by one million learners.

LinkedIn Learning was one of these resources. In June 2020,  Microsoft made 14 learning paths on LinkedIn Learning available for free. At the time, we shared the list of learning paths with free certificates with Class Central’s learners, which also proved to be very popular.

So, I decided to find out if there were more free certificates available. I looked through LinkedIn Learning’s catalog of 9,000+ courses and 425 learning paths (which consist of a set of bundled courses) and identified the ones available for free and that offer free certificates.

Here’s what I found: 160 courses and 22 learning paths offer free certificates,  as well has 320 free courses for a total of 750+ hours of free online learning. You can find the comprehensive lists below. Click on a link to jump to the corresponding section.

We’re not sure how long these courses will offer free certificates. However, we plan to keep an eye on LinkedIn Learning and update the list continuously. In fact, the list initially had 350 hours of free resources. Now, it’s 750 hours. So, stay tuned! And if you find more free certificates or courses, or if you notice an error in the list, please tell us in the comments.

You may also want to have a look at some of our other compilations of free certificates and courses, including:

How to earn a LinkedIn Learning Free Certification

To earn a certificate for an individual course, watch all videos and take the quizzes. In courses, you’ll need to take an exam. Once you’re done, go to the “Related to this course” section below the video (on desktop) and click on “Show all”.

A window will pop up with certificates available for the course (see example above). Click on “Download” to get your LinkedIn Learning certificate. Some courses also offer Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits, in addition to the LinkedIn Learning certificate.

To earn a certificate for a learning path, you need to complete all the path’s courses. Then, you’ll be able to download the learning path certificate.

LinkedIn Learning Free Mini-courses

We noticed that some LinkedIn Learning courses were rather short (less than 20 minutes of content), so we moved them to their own section below and called them “mini-courses”.
